Michael Maher is an Australian Singer/Songwriter who has been touring Europe for the past 10 years together with his band, worldfly. He first traveled to Germany in the Early 90’s, as a young backpacker and after falling in love with the country, lived there for 10 years. Michael is fluent in German and these days thinks of Germany as his second home.
Michael’s songwriting features on the Album ‘A World Gone Crazy’ which was released in Germany in August 2013 and debuted at number 15 on the Amazon mp3 charts. The first single from that Album, Über den Wolken’ was his German record labels (Dramatico - Sarah Blasko, Kate Miller Heidke, Gurrumul)) highest downloaded single for the summer of 2013.
In August 2013, his version of Reinhard Mey’s classic German song, Über den Wolken’, was performed live on the famous TV show ‘ZDF Fernsehgarten’ to an audience of over 3 million viewers. It was voted ‘listeners choice’ on Radio Berlin for five weeks straight, appeared in Itunes Germany top 100 downloads and was on rotation on numerous major German radio stations.
Michael has played hundreds of shows at clubs and festivals throughout Europe, including the support for Gurrumul’s 2010 European tour. He has also performed at numerous festivals in Australia including, The East Coast and West Coast Blues and Roots Festivals, Woodford Folk Festival and Darwin Festival and more. He has developed a unique grass roots touring strategy in Europe that combines club shows with busking and street performance.
In 2010 and 2011 Michael sold over 15,000 copies of his debut album, ‘it’s too late for turning back’. The first two single releases from that Album, ‘someone special’ and ‘a small boat’, were played on radio stations across Germany including SWR3, Radio Eins, Deutschlandfunk, Bayern 3 and Radio Fritz (Berlin). The second single, ‘someone special’, won Michael Maher an Australian Songwriter of the Year award and his debut release was voted in ABC DIG radio’s (now Double JJ’s) top 10 albums of 2010.
The Album 'a world gone crazy' was released in Germany, Switzerland, Austria in 2013.
His latest Album ‘Streetfighter’, is set for release on August 22nd, to coincide with his 'Big Love Tour' of Europe in August/September/October of 2016.
